Adam the owner of Blue Coast Surf & Paddle reflecting on the school's first season in business

A great first season - feeling good!

6
minute read

As our main season comes to a close, we're reflecting on some awesome things that happened at Blue Coast in August, September and October, alongside our regular surf lessons, paddleboard lessons and tours, and SUP Yoga with Kimberley. It's been a busy few months!

Blue Coast has attracted new people to Cullen over the past seven months, as well as offering new adventures to returning visitors to the town. It's been an absolute pleasure to read reviews and comments from our customers as they come in, it's very motivating to see that folks are enjoying the experiences they have here and are feeling the benefits!

We closed off our main season with some really fun surf lessons as the autumn swells started to roll through. We're already looking forward to next season and in the meantime will be working on some exciting plans to improve Blue Coast's offering for next year.

Read to the bottom for a video reflection on our first season and our favourite moments from Blue Coast's first year!

EmmieJo joined the Blue Coast team and has been a great help taking some cracking photos and helping during lessons. Good luck with your exams EJ and looking forward to next season!

Launch of Nippers Kids Club

We opened our weekly Nippers Kids Club sessions in August and these have been a great success. It's brilliant to have the opportunity to get more local kids enjoying the sea and learning skills that will help them in the future.

Banff Academy P.E. Surfing!

In the same vein, we were delighted to be contacted by Banff Academy to take some of their P.E. students out surfing as part of their P.E. programme, a la the Australian school system. Very forward thinking from Banff Academy, we expect to see more initiatives like this across the UK in the future!

Team-building activities

Surfing and paddleboarding make great team-building activities and we thoroughly enjoyed taking staff from Gordon & MacPhail paddleboarding and the teachers at Banff Academy surfing for their in-service day. We genuinely believe our activities help people feel good, and in terms of employees that they help boost productivity and staff wellbeing. This is something we will be developing as a priority going into next season.

Stretch & Surf Yoga Retreats

We ran our second two Stretch & Surf Yoga Day Retreats in October with Kimberley. Another wholesome two days in lovely company, filled with yoga, surfing and good food. Look out for these events running again next Spring!

Dalrymple Wellness Retreat

On our last weekend we were blessed with beautiful weather and small waves and we ran a day filled up with activities for a wellness retreat organised by the owners of Dalrymple Cottage in Seatown. Morning surfing, afternoon paddleboard tour followed by some SUP Yoga. A memorable day with some lovely people.

Shetland Gathering of the Clans 2022

Adam took a weekend off in October to head up to Shetland to compete in the second most northerly surf contest to ever take place, and came away with a win in the Longboard division. Really fun trip and a beautiful place!

North East Adventure Tourism

We are extremely grateful to have received a grant from Opportunity North East and North East Adventure Tourism, which has allowed us to purchase some new equipment and have the opportunity to learn skills to improve our offering. Watch this space for new activities in the future!
